SKY SE - Which setting should i use

FAQ

The SKY is a super versatile kite.  With multiple settings to adjust the kite to your liking.
On this page you can find all the settings and the combination that work the best in our opinion.  Whether you are boosting big or prefer a more forward angle of attack.  The SKY will get you going.

First you need to know the differences between each setting on the angle of attack setting.
Rocket mode
Foil Mode  (recommended)

sky se rocket setting

ROCKET

MAXIMIZES YOUR BOOSTS

It’s very tempting to set your kite directly to Rocket mode when you recieve it. We highly recommend you to read this manual first.

With the Rocket setting you are setting the Angle of attack right on the edge of what is possible.  Maximizing your boost, go higher than ever!

As you will be working on a maximized angle of attack the kite will be more sensitive to backstall.

Benefits

  • Maximized Boosts
  • More power
  • More grunt

Drawbacks

  • More sensitive to backstall.
  • requires more skill of rider.
  • Less upwind performance.

Setting up

The best combinations

MOST STABLE

  • Bottom knot on steering line pigtail.
  • ROCKET setting
  • GO super high without oversheeting the kite.

MOST POWER

  • TOP knot on steering line pigtail
  • Rocket setting
  •  MAXIMUM BOOST – more sensitive to backstall

FOIL

MAXIMIZES THE KITES PERFORMANCE

The Foil setting.  Our recommended setting for most riders!  We agree a different icon could work too.  But it’s super smooth sailing with this setting.

With the Foil setting you are setting the Angle of attack right is more forward.  Making the kite more stable and more friendly.

As you will be working further away from the maximum angle of attack you will need to set the backlines a bit more tight.

Benefits

  • More stable
  • Easier riding
  • More hangtime / upwind performace

Drawbacks

  • Less powerful
  • Softer feel

Setting up

The best combinations

RECOMMENDED SETTING (!)

  • TOP knot on  steeringline pigtail
  • Foil  setting
  • Most hangtime + upwind performace.

HIGH WIND SETTING

  • Bottom knot on steeringline pigtail
  • Foil setting
  • limits the amount of power in the kite.
  • adding a bit of highend.

Turning speed & Barpressure

The Sky has 3 additional settings on  the wingtip. Adjusting those settings will give your kite either more or less bar pressure and it will adjust the turning speed.

  • V1  – On absolute wingtip
  • Maximum turning speed
  • Minimal bar pressure
  • Kite pivots around a .
  • V2  – The middle setting
  • Medium  turning speed
  • Medium bar pressure
  • kite pivots around a o
  • V3  – Furthest from tip
  • less turning speed
  • More bar pressure
  • kite pivots around a O

We highly recommend the V1 Wingtip setting for the sizes 10 and 12.

For heavy riders we recommend to adjust this setting to V2 on sizes 9 – 8 and 7.

Remember the wider the kite pivots the more radical the kiteloops.

Which knot to use on the pigtail.

The final and most important step is setting up the Kite on the top or bottom knot.
This small change can actually make or break your session and will determine the feel you have with the kite.

It’s very important that your bar is set correctly. As your lines may shrink over time we cannot recommend 1 setting to be perfect for eacht rider.  We highly recommend to play around with the correct knots and right setting for your kite.

Use those rules of thumb when you have sufficient stable wind for the kite.

Backstall:

  • move down 1 knot.

Slow response or no feeling:

  • Move up 1 knot

Catching up with Markos

NEWS

The first half a year of Markos with Fluid kiteboarding and it’s time to catch up with him!  Get up close and personal with Markos our 23 year old  teamrider from Greece. He’s been riding for 6 years and just got his first International sponsorship with Fluid kiteboarding in 2021.

Why kiteboarding?

When I kite I feel like I am free, and the rush I get performing each trick is insane! Being up in the air so high and seeing everything below look so small is something not many people get to experience.  I think its really cool. Theres also an unlimited number of combinations and rotations in the air which makes every session really fun. There is always something new to learn.

What are your goals in kiteboarding?
A couple of goals I have are to enter some more big air competitions, after my first one I cant wait to compete again. I also want to perfect my backroll board off kiteloop, and continue to ride in as many of the amazing spots across the world as I can.

Markos psaltakis on the Fluid kiteboarding XTR

Your first competition, where was it and how did it go?
It was down in Mexico where i was  teaching this winter.  I ended up making it to the semi finals! Unfortunately the wind dropped a lot in that heat so it was a bit harder to get real height and perform my tricks. But The equipment its reliable and makes you feel confident while riding. I was riding the competition with the Sky v4 8 and 9 meters and the control I had over the kite was incredible, and the power these kites gave me even in light winds. Just perfect.

Is Mexico your favourite Destination?
No it’s not..

I have been to many nice spots that I could put on my favourites, but the game changer is definitely Cape town. This spot is so extreme, the wind is strong and consistent, and has huge waves you can use as kickers. The wind is great, but so is the company, everyone there is ready to push you to the next level which gets you so pumped to get onto the water. I can’t wait to be flying Fluid there later this year!

You seem to be getting a LOT of hangtime out of those sky v4’s. Which settings do you recommend riders to use?

there are so many options you can go for  and really adjust it to the best setting for each style of riding.

The sky V4 is definitely the kite that makes you fly (forever), The settings I use when I want to go big is the both lines on the first (+) setting closest to the tip. This make the kite more responsive and so it allows me to move the kite faster.
Perfect for kiteloops in stronger winds.
I’m also using the More power setting on the steeringline it makes a huge difference on both power and reaction speed.

For my big air set up

Kite: Sky v4 9M On FAST (+) / Rocket mode / MORE POWER

Bar: CSE

Board: TWOSEVEN XTR  138

What can we expect from you in 2022??
I’ve just returned to Greece and will 2022 is the year that I’m gonna push my limits and show everyone what fluid kites can do. I have a season kiting in Greece coming up this summer where I want to go higher than ever, ready to send it in Cape town this winter

Fluid kiteboarding's update with Gilion

NEWS

A year has passed after the massive changes for Fluid kiteboarding. We’ll be looking back at all changes with Gilion and we will be looking into the future.

First things first, how is everything going?
Everything is going well and very busy! 2021 was a huge gamble to see if the public would accept and appreciate all the changes we’ve made. A new look and feel for a brand is a huge thing. But It’s been an amazing season!  Even with all the supply issues for all brands in the market. I think we’ve done very well and feedback has been amazing. I’m also very stoked with our new teamrider(s) and all that they have been doing for Fluid kiteboarding.

What can we expect for 2022-2023?
It’s a public secret that we are working on another kite model named AIR as mentioned last year . It’s taking a bit longer than expected but we are getting closer every day with the production model.  The SKY is such a good kite with a true WOW factor. I want the AIR to have the exact same thing or it won’t be put out to the market. I’m pretty sure its just a matter of months now before we can get it on the market.  Of course that’s not the only thing I’m working on but for sure it’s probably the biggest thing.
I’m also expecting to expand our kiteteam on local/national and international level. But to do this I feel that we need the new kite ready first.  Markos and myself are ambassadors for the SKY.  It fits our riding style with loads of stylish rotations, boardoffs and hangtime.
Also I’m sure we will be starting more co-operations as we’ve done in the past year for media and customer service.

Markos psaltakis on the Fluid kiteboarding XTR

Will the AIR model replace the SKY or will there be a SKY v5?
It’s a question frequently asked.  For sure I can tell you the new model will NOT replace the SKY. It will be positioned next to the SKY v4 in the line up.  There is also no plan for 2022 to replace the SKY to a v5 model. It feels like we’ve just launched the SKY v4 and the world is still discovering this amazing model.

Are we going to see any Fluid kiteboarding gear in competitions?
About this I’m still not sure. The kitescene is definitely moving towards big air. Exactly the part we are strong in right now. But to be honest competition at this stage is for the riders. It’s great to see riders pushing it in competitions around the world.  I prefer to be more accessible to the public and not have gear in competition than the other way around.

For now we’re focusing on social media and real world exposure. Although it could be that you’ll see it appearing somewhere in comp this year.

Gilion changing something on the AIR prototype

What’s your favorite kitemoment of 2021?

that a hard question to answer!  I’m pretty stoked about signing a Markos and having some sessions with friends in Greece. I can’t really pick just 1 moment that stood out. I haven’t kited as much as I wanted and ofcourse covid was still among us giving the world a hard time.
Maybe I’m just happy that 2021 passed and we’ve done better than ever.
for 2022 it’s easy -> looping to the left
😉

What??
Haha, yeah for me looping left foot forward has always been a bit of a struggle. Right foot forward I can do whatever..  Left on the other hand needs a bit / a lot of work.
Great thing you never stop learning with kitesurfing, as long as you push yourself that is.

Fins fins fins!

Fluid kiteboarding G10 - twintip - kiteboarding - fins

Fins, Fins, Fins!!

FAQ

No we’re not talking about the ones from Finland. Nor are we talking about the ones that scare you when you’re in the ocean ;). We’re talking about kiteboard fins and specifically the ones on your twintip.
Fins are very often overlooked and very underestimated.
Your fins can make or break your experience with a board.  The right fin for your style of riding can also save you big bucks.  Sometimes it’s not necessary to swap your board but a simple adjustment to your twintip fin setup can do the trick.

In this article we will cover the basics and we’ll have a look at what changing your fin setup will do for you.

Ok so let’s make it simple.
Fins are very much like the tyres on your car / bike.  More surface area will give you more grip eg.  Larger fins will give you more grip while smaller fins will give you less of it.
But as driving on a dirt road with Formula 1 tires will be challenging so is kitesurfing in choppy conditions with the wrong type of fin.
Fins are your connection to the water similar to your car’s tyres on the road.

Most kiteboard manufacturers make the fin choice for you. Adding fins that will complement the style of riding they have focussed the board on. Although local conditions may require different fins to get the most out of your board.  Back to the tyres -> You may be on a summer tyres on a snowy road.  That doesn’t mean your car (board) is bad 😉

What do kiteboard fins do?
Fins affect 3 very important performance areas of the board.  Grip/pop, carve/slide and upwind ability.
Remove your fins for a short session and you’ll notice a “loss of control” when making hard turns.  Your board will try to spin out of control when you are exiting the turn.  Landings will  be harder and upwind, well that’s really all technique. For some style or riding (experienced riders)  it’s common to ride without fins to nice surface rotations and passes.

Size does matter!
It’s very simple a large fin has more surface so it creates more grip.  A shorter / smaller fin will give you more freedom on the slide/carve part but will lack on the upwind ability.
More grip also adds to the upwind ability.
The major downside of larger fins is that they will feel a bit like riding on train tracks. Large fins have so much grip they simply want to continue in the direction they’re going.  Perfect for beginners who’re just getting used to riding and can use a bit of “help”. Large fins are also a perfect choice for light wind riding as they will give you more upwind performance. However short fins in light wind are very fun too.  Take for example a skimboard.

Small <3CM
Medium >3-5 CM
Large > 5CM

Smaller fins will give you a much more playful board and are the perfect choice for wakestyle type of riding.  Powered but not too powered.

Medium style fins are generally what manufacturers go for as it will already give them a massive pallet of performance. For us it’s very simple.

Gilion Fluid kiteboarding about fins

Asymmetrical or symmetrical.
Regular fins are symmetrical means both the inside and the outside are curved.  This gives you a stable fin that does what it should do. However in high wind / high speed conditions symmetrical fins will give a little more drag (turbulence) and a loss of control may happen.
Asymmetrical fins are flat on the inside and curved on the outside. This will make the water flow faster on the inside then it does on the outside.  Generating “lift” or in the case of a fin this will feel as suction.  Resulting in more grip. The more speed you generate the more “grip” you’ll get out of the fin.  Asymmetrical fins are definitely the way to go when you want the best of both worlds. They can be short with nearly all the benefits of a large fin.
The only thing you need to add is speed!

Materials:
There are a few common materials when it comes to kiteboarding fin manufacturing.  Plastic, G10 resin and carbon.  Plastic is cheap but has a lot of negative aspects so not great for performance fins.  They break faster than the other materials, are a bit more flexible so generate more drag / turbulence) and get very sharp when riding in sand.

G10 is the most common material when it comes to high quality fins.  They are much stiffer than plastic fins and are also fairly easy to produce. The price for a set of G10 fins is generally between 40-80 euro.
All Fluid kiteboarding fins are made from G10 material.
Downside:  can get dents in the material which influence the waterflow.

Carbon – Expensive but great fins for those who need it.

So it’s simple!
Are you looking for grip -> larger fins
Are you looking for a more loose / playful feel -> smaller fins.
Your style of riding and the location you ride in have  large influence on your riding.  Don’t just try new fins 1 session .
BTW did you know most manufacturers use a standard M6 fin with standard hole distance!!  You can use another brand fins on your board no problem!

catching up with gilion fluid kiteboarding goveia

INTERVIEW: Catching up with the owner of Fluid kiteboarding.

NEWS

Fluid kiteboarding was fully redesigned in 2021 after being in the market for over 14 years.  It’s time to catch up with Gilion Goveia the owner of Fluid kiteboarding to catch up, get some insights on the brand and the future.

Fluid was already going well why did you fully redesign the brand?
I’ve been the owner of Fluid kiteboarding since 2012.  The main focus has been on increasing the quality (both build and ride) and being innovative.  I felt that our build quality of the kites was superior of the looks and feel of the brand. Our boards probably are the best you can find on the market, unmatched build quality, innovative designs and great prices.  Fluid kites should have been exactly that… Same innovative looks, build quality and designs.  Pushing the limits of what is possible in the industry.

I’d also noticed that during the pandemic a lot of new kiters came to the beach.  They seem like a brand new generation who just want easy plug and play performance from their equipment.  Our kites offered a lot of options but for the new riders it would be a bit complex to get everything out of the kites.  Many settings are awesome if you know how to use them!
Making the kites more user-friendly definitely was high on my list too. Everyone should have a great 1st experience.  It’s the 15th year of Fluid kiteboarding so I wanted to make everything perfect.

How did covid affect your choice of redesigning Fluid kiteboarding and did it eventually go as planned?
Haha, well first of all nothing ever goes as planned! The pandemic made kitesurfing and other outdoor sports more popular than ever. So on that note covid definitely pushed me to initiate the redesign.  What I’d never seen coming were all the problems with getting in product and getting raw materials to produce our new equipment.
In 2020 we were very lucky to have a very steady flow of products from our suppliers.  At the end of the year our kite factory already mentioned there were going to be issues with our new triple ripstop delivery.  It took much longer than expected to get the product.  Not even to mention the shipping dramas.
But to be fair there are always small things to adjust after big changes.

You’ve designed most of the new equipment, did it come out as you expected?
YES!  100% and even better! For example we made some backpack samples with one factory but they were so busy due to the pandemic.  They just returned our money and said good luck with finding someone who can make the bags for you.  Eventually we found a supplier who believed in us, saw the difficulties of the design and made all the bags even better than we had planned. I can truly enjoy it when the suppliers helps to increase quality of the products with their expertise.
But eventually the opinion of (new) Fluid kiteboarding users confirmed we all did a great job!

Are you still running Fluid kiteboarding by yourself?
Yes and no! Fluid kiteboarding is still my brand but I have some people who can advise on certain parts. There are some parts of the job that only the owner can do. But there are also parts where you can use other people’s experience. On marketing or designs or even on the manufacturing side of things.
Everybody has a massive part in the Fluid kiteboarding brand.
Without them I can’t pull it off!  That’s why it’s always we for me when I’m talking about Fluid kiteboarding.

Before you had an international team set up and multiple dealers online what’s up with that?
Our dealer network is actually increasing and renewed.  Unfortunately some didn’t survive the pandemic and we just wanted a fresh start in some countries with new dealers. Our kites sold out super-fast due to all those new dealers.
I’m sure a lot of new riders and shops will be attracted to the brand.. Our network will be up and running soon again.  Now you can also order online with free worldwide shipping!  We believe in supporting the local shops though.

About our international team it’s pretty simple.  We’ve a new direction for the brand so we need new riders too.  Top level riders who have great potential. We put out the opportunity for riders to get a full sponsorship just by applying via a simple form.. It’s been insane to see how many of you responded. The criteria were pretty high but it’s great to see how many of you are pushing kiteboarding.
Soon very very soon we have news!

gilion goveia fluid kiteboarding interview

What are the plans for the rest of the year?

We don’t work with years but with versions!  If everything goes well we will be able to launch another kite model later this year.  It’s been a bit postponed unfortunately but we’re definitely working on it.  Also a new bar should be ready and a lot of amazing new content will be dropped!

New kite!! Tell us more?
It’s not been a secret we will put out a kite called AIR.  Right now we are working on the final details of the kite before putting it to market.  We’ve narrowed our range down to 2 models that have potential to become the final version.  I can’t tell you too much but it won’t be a boosting machine like the SKY.

And the new bar?

Well it’s been a pain to get the bar out!  A bar has so many different parts and materials it’s very hard to get the supplychain smoothed out at the moment.  Some parts are available while others take months to receive.  We’re very close to a final version and should be ready with the AIR kite.

What is your favorite Fluid kiteboarding set up?

My ridingstyle is a bit wierd. It’s a mix of oldschool, freestyle and big air but also no handers and wierd boardoffs.
It requires a lot of power so for my kite 100% the SKY.  Although i’ve had some fun sessions on the AIR already too.
for the board I’m going for a 134 Twoseven XTR with 4.5 CM fins. It balances out the board exactly how i like it.
on flatwater and big waves I prefer the 3.5 asymmetrical  fins setup.

Why haven’t you been in competitions?

I’m a very competitive person but i also know i’m terrible at sports where judges come in. I don’t like that opinions “score”.  That’s why i was happy to set the WOO record in 2015  (first over 20m in the world) and did many jumps like that on other devices.  Although it raised questions at the time the facts were pretty clear. I did 1 competition, NK big air. It was fun to compete with friends and the result wasn’t bad at all 5th overall.

Now i just want to ride as i like and have fun and be creative. Inspire people to use their mind to come up with new stuff.  And i’m too busy with running Fluid kiteboarding and other work.

gilion goveia fluid kiteboarding interview

It seems you are getting more into photography, will we see more content?

I’ve always taken pictures but since last year it’s a bit more serious. I’ve bought a new camera for filming but eventually it turned out i’m better in taking pictures than creating films.  Capturing moment in time in a perfect frame is so satisfying. I’ll definitely get some more media out.

Anything you want to share with the readers?
If you haven’t tried a Fluid kite or board go out there and try one out.

Fluid kiteboarding

Fluid kiteboarding 3.0

NEWS

Fluid kiteboarding was founded in 2007 and taken over by the current owner in 2012. It’s been more than 10 years since we have started Fluid kiteboarding. In our 15th year on the market it’s time to set out a new path.

We introduce to you Fluid kiteboarding 3.0. A Fresh new look, Top of the line product quality and of course our outstanding level of service. Our foundations remain the same as a privately owned company.  We are the greatest value for money kiteboarding company out there.

What the owner says.

It’s always been a dream come true to work in the kitesurfing industry. The best thing is to be at the beach and see you’ve made a real impact.  Making kitesurfing more accessible was and still is the target. Our prices haven’t changed much over the years, keeping it affordable for everyone to try out our amazing sport.

We’ve always been pushing the limits in manufacturing our products. Making our products the greatest value for money you can get.  Our unmatched product quality has been noticed by you and our competitors! Everybody that has tried our products will agree.  We are a true asset to the market.

Of course there are parts in running a brand that have been done better by our competitors.  Things that have nothing to do with how great our products are. With Fluid kiteboarding 3.0 we are taking all parts to or beyond our competitors levels.

Believe me if i tell you our name will be everywhere in the next few years.
i’ve always said we are here to stay!  With Fluid kiteboarding 3.0 we are here to take over!

We can’t do this alone, we need you!
